DF Seeds is here for you in the fight against Phytophthora Root Rot
By Ty Bodeis | March 1, 2022
Most of you have had to deal with phytophthora root rot (PRR) before. It is a disease that we see most years, especially on those heavier, wetter soils and untiled acres. DF Seeds is here to help you manage PRR. We select resistant genetics and seed treatments to give you the best soybean crop under high disease pressure.
Dr. Martin Chilvers, Michigan State University, has been conducting research over the last few years identifying the PRR strains that we have in Michigan, and how each of the resistance genes do against them. He has found the 3a, 3c and 4 races of resistance to be the most effective, with others providing relatively little control. These genes are uncommon, with most varieties available having the 1K or 1C gene. These were highly effective when the last research was done.
DF seeds is happy to offer our new DF 3172 N E3 with the 3a source of resistance. Additionally, we will be evaluating many experimental lines with 3a, 3c and 4 races of resistances in them to expand our lineup with these highly effective PRR resistance.
In the meantime, many varieties offer a field tolerance, which is an ability to tolerate the disease and still yield well, even without a specific resistance gene. Look to the soybean product information page or contact your local DF rep to find out the field tolerance of the beans you’ll be growing.
Another management option available to farmers is seed treatment. Seed treatments can be effective in controlling PRR when the right product is used with the right rate. Proper application with good coverage is also a factor in PRR control. You can trust the team at DF seeds to have DFender formulated at the right rate and applied uniformly to your seed.
In higher PRR pressure situations combining our DF 3172 N E3 with DFender seed treatment is a great option for maximum yields. The combination of the resistance gene, with DFender seed treatment will provide the best defense against the disease. Using two modes of action against PRR will help keep both the resistance gene and seed treatment effective for the future.
